Toucian River

The early work on the development and management of rivers was emphasized the construction of hydraulic facilities which were related to flood-control and water resource allocation, but the ecological protection was barely concerned. The current issue in the river management is how we can balance water utilization, flood-damage mitigation, and the recovery of the local natural environment. In the demand of river environment protection, we need to establish the basic ecological data to provide the river engineers for more ideal design.

The results of the investigation not only provide more complete biological and ecological data for future management of the whole Touchien River basin, but also carry out the true goal of ecological engineering methods. The major achievements

of this project were: habitat investigation, river biological composition, ecological resource database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Through the integrated data, we provide environmental protection index and suggestions for the river management.

From the research in past two years, the river biological composition investigation revealed that the environment of the Touchien River was more stable in the midstream, and also the habitat was more diversified, thus more species could be preserved in midstream.In the branches, we found large-sized fishes in the reserve area. The compositions and distributions of the fauna and flora in Touchien River system are largely affected by environmental factors. Since 2004, we inquired into the whole Touchien River. The detailed species are stored as below:

Glycine max (L.) Merr. subsp. formosanum

In the aquatic ecosystem, We found the Rhinogobius candidianus were the widely distributed fish over the river and the Macrobrachium asperulum were the widest shrimp. Eriocheir japonicus were the most kinds of carbs. The alage mainly on Bacillarophyceae. The biggest problem that the submerged creatures to encounter were the ways are not continuous. We suggested that we should add fish ways to solve problems.

In the terrestrial ecosystem, we recorded 331species of plants, 23 species of reptiles, 100 species of insects. The most outside kinds of plants were Leacaena leucocephala. The composition of birds were quite copious, we collectes 104 species of birds. The frogs that we recorded at most were Rana limnocharis.

Since 2004, we had executed the project for two years. The river biological composition investigation revealed that the environment of the Touchien River was more stable in the midstrean, and also habitat was more diversified, thus more species could be preserved in midstream. According to the result of investigative information, we will be able to provide some suggestions for Touchien River system.
